Cubase can be used to edit and sequence audio signals coming from an external sound source and MIDI , and can host VST instruments and effects. It has a number of features designed to aid in composition, such as:. The user can also mix the various tracks down into a stereo. Cubase VST 3. This made it possible for third-party software programmers to create and sell virtual instruments for Cubase. This technology has become a de facto standard for other DAW software, when integrating software based instruments on the Macintosh and Windows platforms.
A new version of VST, VST3, was introduced with Steinberg’s Cubase 4 which introduced improved handling of automation and audio output, native sidechaining, and many other features. When Cubase 6 was released in , Steinberg introduced 5 different editions for different levels of use.
They have all been updated as new versions come out. While they all run on the same audio engine, the lower tiers have limits on the number of certain types of tracks. Cubase has existed in three main incarnations. After a brief period with audio integration, the next version, Cubase VST , featured fully integrated audio recording and mixing along with effects. It added Virtual Studio Technology VST support, a standard for audio plug-ins , which led to a plethora of third-party effects, both freeware and commercial.
Cubase VST was only for Macintosh and Windows; Atari support had been effectively dropped by this time, despite such hardware still being a mainstay in many studios. Cubase VST was offering a tremendous amount of power to the home user, but computer hardware took some time to catch up. To address this, a new version of the program, Cubase SX based on Steinberg’s flagship post-production software Nuendo was introduced, which dramatically altered the way the program ran.
This version required much relearning for users of older Cubase versions. However, once the new methods of working were learned, the improvements in handling of audio and automation made for a more professional sequencer and audio editor.
A notable improvement with the introduction of Cubase SX was the advanced audio editing, especially the ability to ‘undo’ audio edits. Early versions of Cubase VST did not have this ability. In January , Steinberg was acquired by Pinnacle Systems , within which it operated as an independent company before being sold to Yamaha Corporation in December, Notable new features include ‘control room’, a feature designed to help create monitor mixes, and a new set of VST3 plug-ins and instruments.
There are also lighter economic alternatives by Steinberg, originally named Cubasis , later becoming Cubase SE and then Cubase Essential at version 4.
For its sixth generation, the program was renamed Cubase Elements 6. The name change was done presumably, because its rival Cakewalk had taken the Essential branding for its own entry-level DAW software, Sonar X1 Essential. While the full version of Cubase features unlimited audio and MIDI tracks, lesser versions have limits.
This version was a full rewrite and supports MIDI and audio tracks, audiobus and virtual MIDI to work with external music apps from the first versions. In mid, Cubasis 3 was released for Android tablets and smartphones. Some notable users include: [7] [8] [9]. The main innovation of Cubase was the graphic arrange page, which allowed for the graphic representation of the composition using a vertical list of tracks and a horizontal timeline. It has since been copied by just about every other similar product.
Cubase SX2. Many plug-ins, particularly those which run on DSP Cards such as UAD-1 or Powercore, cannot process their audio within a 1-sample time period and thus introduce extra latency into the system. Unchecked, this will cause some audio channels to end up out of sync with others. PDC checks all the various latencies introduced by such plug-ins and creates audio delay buffers to ensure that audio from all channels is correctly synchronized. Audiowarp was largely successful, but had a major flaw in that it didn’t work with variable tempo projects.
This was because the tempo map it copied to the Audio file when musical mode was enabled was derived from the fixed tempo setting of the project rather than from the tempo track. Nonetheless Audiowarp was an important addition to the musical features of Cubase. Despite the caveats, having the ability to change the tempo of a musical piece and have the audio tracks follow this new tempo was an important ability in music production.
Cubase 4. With this version the preset system was changed. They were replaced by a preset system that integrates in a new feature, the Media Bay, which allows deeper categorizing and managing of presets.

Once you create a Marker Part with the pencil tool you can edit it in much the same way as any other part using the other tools.
Marker parts are also useful for navigation: a single click on one moves the Song Position Pointer to its start, while a double click opens up a text window for any further notes you might like to type in.
Cycle Recording has a new Add Mode that lets you record multiple takes while in Cycle mode, and then choose the best ones afterwards. A folder track is created, and each new take appears as an extra track inside it. All but the most recent are automatically muted, which makes subsequent auditioning easier as well. Here you can see the extended Inspector, the improved display of events within MIDI tracks, along with individual track zooming, the Marker Track, Controller Editor, and another of the five sizes of Transport Bar.
First seen in Mac version 4. Previously, the only way to achieve the same end was to use the Cut At Locators command to separate out a section, and then glue its constituent parts back together again afterwards.
Many musicians have never bothered trying to create their own presets for the Logical Editor, since saving your own meant overwriting one of the factory ones.
This lets you set up a loop and then try out different quantise settings in context before you apply them. Both Logical and Groove presets are saved in designated folders, and if you load in songs created with previous Cubase versions you get the option to move their logical presets and grooves into your central library. You can now Mute individual notes in the Key editor, and a new Nudge tool is also provided to move any note backwards or forwards by the current Snap value.
In line with the new ppqn resolution, the Snap value in both the Key editor and the Arrange page can now be adjusted from a bar’s length right down to a single frame. The display resolution can also be set between and in the General Preferences page. The Channel Settings window is also very reminiscent of that of Nuendo , with a new common panel to the left which is identical to that of the main Channel Mixer, a new vertical insert strip rather than the separate windows used by Cubase 3.
The Dynamics window is unchanged apart from a slight graphic tweak. This is a cutdown version of the Dynamics module featuring three sections labelled Compress, AutoGate, and Limit. These are almost identical to those in the audio mixer channels, but have the added option of a Routing switch to reorder the sections any way you fancy. The MIDI Track Mixer panel is another Mac version 4 feature, and has similar basic facilities to the audio Channel Mixer — a volume fader and level velocity meter, pan, mute and solo buttons for each track, with MIDI channel, track name and output beneath.
An arrow button at the top of each strip opens an extended panel, which can show various controls depending on the mode selected: there are options for controlling various parameters of GS and XG synths, and you can also create your own custom control sets. A common panel to the left of the mixer contains buttons to Mute all audio tracks, and to activate Write and Read automation in exactly the same way as audio tracks.
On the automation front, PC users can finally use the Controller Editor to directly edit automation data for each and every control moved during the Write process. Data for all the audio tracks appears in the Audio Mix track with waveforms displayed behind the controller data, and for the MIDI ones in the Track Mix track, sadly without any note data to help you orient yourself.
You can also create multiple mix tracks if you want to perfect your automation in different passes and then merge them together. Of course the Controller Editor can also be used to edit data in MIDI parts, and here you can view velocity as one of the options, so at least you can see where your notes start. Any number of multiple controls can be viewed simultaneously, and you can draw in new data directly as well. For those used to inserting controller data into MIDI parts, or drawing in dynamic events in the Audio Editor, the time has come to decide between this approach and using the dedicated data generated by moving mixer controls or drawing data directly into the automation Mix tracks.
You can use both techniques simultaneously, but you’ll soon get confused by the two different lots of data producing the final values. Among the many new features are various options for getting data into and out of Cubase 5. For those who want to expand out of the confines of their own PC, Cubase 5.
You can apparently sign up for free ‘Internet studio access’ on www. The Universal Sound Module is provided to help with this, since it allows all collaborators to share an identical sound palette, but I wasn’t very impressed with its sounds, which were dull and lifeless with short loops, even though it has up to 80Mb of data to call on. On the output side, Cubase 5. PC owners have waited a long time for the Mac version 4. I’ve had a couple of unrepeatable crashes while exploring the depths of some new features, and spotted a few minor and inconsequential bugs.
However, recording and playback still seems more stable than version 3. Cubase 5. Along with all the major new features there are a host of smaller ones that could prove very useful.
