Client bought a brand new laptop. Came with Windows 10 Home. It is activated. Need it to be Windows 10 Pro. Purchase completed. When try to Install, it keeps failing with Error Code:0xcf and simply says Windows upgrade failed. Can see the order in Microsoft account was purchased online from Microsoft store, so there is no Product Key. When go back to Microsoft store it shows Install button not Buy button, so it knows it’s already purchased But can’t complete the upgrade – keeps giving that error.

Go to the Store to buy genuine Windows. Could be something installed on the machine, like AV, that’s making the upgrade fail. Can you do a fresh install of the 10 Home that came with it then try to upgrade to Pro again? Tried with everything disabled. No difference. Uninstalled the AV it came with, no difference. It is a new installation brand new machine. Finally got way to talk chat to someone at Microsoft.

Speaking with third person now OEM installs often have a lot of junk. Reset and erase every thing on windows 10 home by going to “reset this pc “. Activate win10 home, then upgrade to win 10 pro.

Every single one failed after I put in our licence code, but on reboot, every single one displayed the “Updating Windows” message and came up running W10 Pro Education.
