The Homegroup was set up not requiring passwords. I set up Laptop2 requiring no password, but blank in the window was no good.
I tried the Homegroup and the desktop passwords, and they were rejected. I unjoined Homegroup from all computers, and set up a new one, and got a new password.
Laptop1 joined with the new password, no problem. Laptop2, however, when I entered the Homegroup password, told me that I needed to set it up as a private network. It is private. My wife controls laptop1 for the most part, so I have no clue as to the timing there. Even if the updates resolved the issue, it was a frustrating couple of days trying to fix it myself, when the solution was in Godcrosoft’s hands all along.
