Thought I might run an in-place upgrade repair, but not even that would run! Downloaded tweaking. Windows was restored to functionality.

Re-ran the Office uninstall fix-it tool from Microsoft, and rebooted. And voila, I was able to install Office successfully, and I can resume my life. Thanks for your time.
